Peninsula tomorrow...

Lat - 60'S 41.71
Long - 60'W 38.61
Water Depth - 3647m

Tomorrow we'll be at the Western Antarctic Peninsula. We have some
supplies to drop off at Bellinghausen field camp and then at Copa
field camp and then we'll make our way down to Palmer Station, we
should get there day after tomorrow. The weather has been fantastic -
as flat calm as traversing the Pacific and the sun has been shining -
the Drake has luckily not held up to it's name - please please please
hold out for our next cruise in April!

All very mellow so far, just about have everything set up and ready
to go, have to sew some flags tonight to put on some instruments
we'll leave on the bottom for a year (the flags are on there so that
when we come back to get them we can see them on the sea surface),
maybe i'll start to make up my many noxious chemicals for the trip,
get that out of the way.....

It's fun to be able to plot your location on the map. What depth will you be doing your research? Do you have a submersible and will you be going down? How cold is it? Hope your research goes as planned. Dave

ps Sorry for all the questions but I feel like I have Jacque Cousteau on the other end and want to learn more....

Hi Dave! Just got internet access at Palmer Station - unfortunately I can't get to these Qs while out at sea as we don't get internet. I'll post a blog up about what I am doing out here - probably after we leave Palmer Station tomorrow - just realised of course I probably haven't done that!

We don't have a submersible, we'll be using over-the-side equipment the whole time - so trawls (small, about 1/8 the size of a commercial, and much shorter tows), dredges, cameras, moorings that we put on the bottom and leave there for a year to collect what falls through the water column (so is the food for the deep animals), and some scoops and cores that collect sediment samples intact.

The depths we'll be working at will be between 300m and 1000m - we don't really know until we choose the sites, but I'm hoping for the deeper end....:0)
