Happiness is a Choice

Something i've been trying to get to grips with recently and I just read this phrase which sums it up nicely for me......

"Happiness is a choice"
Unless you choose to be happy for you, no-one around you will be able to make you happy.

Last week was "Floral Friday"......so how about "Feathered Friday" today......here's one of my favorite birds, a Blue Footed Booby from the Galapagos, taken in 2001. Happy weekend!

oh, his feet are so cool!
i agree that if you aren't happy with yourself, others can't necessarily make you happy, but i know too many people with true depression to believe that we must choose happiness. if that were true, there would be more truly happy people!

Yes and no. This quote is really medical issues aside - but that said in depression you do have to make a choice to try and make yourself better, or no amount of pushing by other people will help. I think it's been shown a lot that unless a depressed person acknowledges what is happening to them and makes the choice for themselves to get help ("choosing happiness") be it counseling or drugs, then depression tends to be a lot worse and is much harder (sometimes impossible) to treat.

I think it's the "choosing" bit that is the REALLY hard bit, doesn't always seem to happen and I know I find myself dwelling on the bad too often.....but I do think it's true that a positive attitude definitely helps you deal with the bad better and less stressfully. On the other side no matter how much i try to make someone happy, if they're determined that they are going to be unhappy, there is not much I can do about it until they make the change in themselves.

I agree with you Rhian! Choosing a positive attitude doesn't guarantee happiness, but choosing a negative one pretty much guarantees unhappiness. I remember once my Mom, who had a long list of medical problems, some of them serious, was filling out a form... where it asked for "Health" she checked "Excellent"... my Dad had to talk her down to "Good", just to be honest, but I've always liked her attitude!
